Motherhood Musings

As I drove home the other day from Utah County with a screaming baby in the backseat, I decided to document the moment. I had forgotten Red's antacid medicine at home and I knew his tummy bubbles were bothering him. There was nothing I could do, just drive. Thinking maybe I could soothe his cries, I pulled off the road into a vacant parking lot. I climbed into the backseat, unclipped him from his car seat, wiped his tear-stained face and tried to feed him. No dice. I resorted to our baby-get-the-burp-out dance around the parking lot. This special dance consists of walking, bouncing, swaying and baby-singing which usually results in a long-awaited burp. With the car radio in the distance, we danced around the empty parking lot. On that warm September night I felt my frustrations about not getting home on time disappear. With a shuttered sigh, Red relaxed against my shoulder and I could hear his quiet, happy coos in my ear. The sun was setting behind the desert mountains and the sky turned from a bright orange to a deep purple, my favorite color. A field of wild sunflowers grew around the abandoned parking lot and I watched my little boy's eyes get wide looking at their bright yellow colors. His little hand reached out to grab a flower petal and I instantly had what they call a "duh" moment. I am so blessed. It was in this simple moment of watching my baby experience a sunflower for the first time, on the side of the road, that I realized what's really important. My priorities immediately snapped right back into place and I wanted to do everything for this little human. Life has been so incredibly wonderful and hard and beautiful and difficult all at the same time. I am amazed how much the Lord's hand plays a role in my family's life. I could never be more thankful.

2 Months

Red just passed his 2 month birthday about 2 weeks ago and I am just now blogging about it. Every day gets easier and easier which I could not be more thankful for. We learn something new about Red everyday, he is starting to develop the sweetest personality! I cannot express how thankful I am to have this sweet little boy in my life. I honestly can't imagine my life without him. Here's a few things we have learned about sweet baby Red this month:

11 lbs. 13 oz. 24 inches long.

*His hair is staying put! He hasn't lost much which is something we were really worried about.

*Red's eyes are still blue! Crossing our fingers they stay that way! His vision and tracking skills are remarkable. He surprised even his Dr. and nurses at his appointment by following them everywhere they went around the office. He loves to look at dangly (that a word?) toys that hang off of his car seat carrier.

*RJ is still a crazy eater. I have no idea how that much milk fits into that small body. Every three hours he eats 4-5 oz. Even at night.

*He as mastered the smile and we are on the edge of our seats waiting for a laugh. He is so close! Red is super super smiley. He will coo and squeal and smile at you the entire time he is awake.

*His neck muscles are developing wonderfully. He can hold his head up by himself when in a sitting position and loves to push up on his arms during tummy time to look at everyone. He legs are still super strong too. He puts weight on them when we stand him up and kicks like crazy whenever daddy plays the guitar.

*We are no longer using newborn clothes and 0-3 month is starting to get a little snug. Little boy still fits best in 3 month!

*Little John discovered his hands and feet this month. His little hands are constantly in "grab mode." Shane and I actually witnessed him learn he has feet. Red's eyes locked onto his toes as he moved them back and forth. The confused look on his face was the cutest thing I've ever seen!

*Toby and Red are best friends forever, as you can see. I've been amazed at Toby's patience with a newborn in the house.

*Redfeather still loves to be held when he sleeps but has started letting us lay him down for naps in his swing. He is still on the eat, play, sleep schedule every three hours. However at night he will skip the "play" part which makes me super happy! He finally learned the difference between night and day. Good job Red!

Watching this baby grow is the most rewarding thing I have ever done! Happy Birthday sweet Little John. Mom and Dad love you!

A little behind...

I am a little behind in blogging, which I only feel mostly bad about. Red just passed his 2 month birthday and as his 3 month quickly approaches I realize I have quite a bit of blogging to do. BUT I have been enjoying every minute I get with Little Red and Shane. When I am not home snuggling the heck out of that sweet baby, I'm at work; which I must admit is really, really hard. I've been working on some awesome new photo projects over on my website and I love my job so much, I really do. I am lucky I get to do something so fun and rewarding. I just miss my family so much when I'm gone! Whenever I need a pick-me-up at work I like to look at these photos the incredibly talented Eden Hermanson did for us when Red was about a month old. So until I can get Red's 2 month update up here on the bloggity blog, enjoy these super cute pictures of my super cute family. (I'm only a little biased!)
